I’ve been wanting to address this for a while. Note that I’m not an expert on this subject, since I do not use pre-set palettes and I am mostly a tool-shader.
But WHY does it matter so much? The dolls are obviously not going to look the same, it all depends on HOW you use it. Mariiii has proved this at her site, by shading a skirt with various styles to expose the fact that the same palette can have tons of diversity.
There are only so many colours, who cares if yours match somebody else’s?
I think that the whole concept of “stealing” colours is completely ridiculous. It’s not like there’s some kind of creative process behind making a palette. Putting different colours together in your designs to make them look good yes. . .but making a palette? Any robot can create a palette: just pick a colour, increment it by X to make shades, and there you go.
I usually spend hours just on making a palette, which is why most of them include colours from all over the rainbow, yet add up to one colour, with one effect. I especially spend lots of time on metalpalettes, that I’d be completelely pissed off if someone used them. Palettes are the only thing I’m decent at. They make my art ^^’
Thank you for sharing your opinion Beags. Having an opinion is one thing, stealing is another. Yes, there are people who actually take the time to think about their palettes and they consider palette theft to be stealing. Just because some people don’t think it should be a big deal doesn’t mean they have the right to take other people’s hard work without permission. When in doubt, just ask. You might be surprised who says yes.
Interesting topic. I don’t normally make my own palettes but I would never use anyone esle’s without checking to see if i’m allowed to. Even if I see a really nice colour on a doll and I might consider using a similar colour, i’ll always check to see if I can use it before hand. Some people get really touchy about their palettes and i’m sure there are people out there who are checking to see if people have credited them, which is a scary thought O_O
