So, I’ve taken a bit of a break from the community. During the time, I’ve worked on traditional art and anatomy, and now dolling is from a whole new perspective.

It’’s suddenly clicked to me about how much dollers teach each other the wrong way to do things. Many dollers want to advance as general artists, as well, but they’re going about it in ways that most traditional artists wouldn’t recommend. Personally, I believe in learning anatomy and realism first, then stylising it as much as you want. However, I see lots of new dollers drawing cartoony things from their first onwards, then wondering why they can’t do realism.

I don’t really know how to say it without being an elitist cunt, but there’s a lot of misinformation and bad anatomy here, and we all need work on it. Lots.

But WHY does it matter so much? The dolls are obviously not going to look the same, it all depends on HOW you use it. Mariiii has proved this at her site, by shading a skirt with various styles to expose the fact that the same palette can have tons of diversity.

There are only so many colours, who cares if yours match somebody else’s?

For example, you’re browsing Trashy, and you see a design of lingerie that you love. The designs are often copyrighted, right? If we copy it in a doll, is it theft? Does it make us antagonistic, as if we were making traced bases?

We are at a lack ._.
They’re mostly big-headed/eyed chibis, DHF ripoffs, or animu traces
We need more bases like Pyrochan’s Fashion, Zipple’s Medley, and Aerieyena’s Ursula that have unique, interesting styles.
And good poses. I’m getting sick of the standard facing-forward/hand-on-hip/insertotherboringpose sets.
Yay dead horse topics!

Happy/cute dolls are usually cartoony, and include themes such as fairies, flowers, glitter, rainbows, etc. Unfortunately, I’ve realised that a lot of the cute dolls don’t have much depth or context. They focus too much on looking cute, and less on having meaning. I have to say that a lot of the more popular dollers find their style to be like this, but a good doll without meaning is shit, whereas a badly-done doll with concept and originality is awesome.

The same can be said for darker dollers and their use of blood, gore and sex. It really depends on how much you look past the OMG SHINY and focus on what matters: the idea.

I’ve noticed the growing trend of dollers who only doll characters from their RPs. I’ve never been into RPs, so it’s kind of irritating. It also makes the dollers only doll the SAME.THING.OVER.AND.OVER. Because of this, you won’t learn to doll anything else, and if you try to create something new, then it’ll probably look like utter shit. I’ve had people tell me that dolling them helps you do x, but if you’re just dolling the same thing, you’re learning to do that particular subject, not whatever you’re trying to learn. One of the things that helps you learn a new artistic concept is the ability to apply it to a wide range of subjects, which is the opposite of dolling only RP characters.

Plus, repetition gets boring quickly. If you’re just going to doll the same thing, who cares any more? Try something new.
